About this Program
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, European rulers began to dispatch embassies to Beijing to establish diplomatic relations with imperial China. European envoys and their Chinese counterparts soon discovered that they each had very different views about the organization and conduct of relations between sovereign rulers. Fast forward to today, competing visions of international order are once again a major issue in China’s strategic competition with the West. How can the history of China’s diplomatic encounters with Europe help us understand today’s challenges in international politics? What are the relevant competing visions of international order currently at play? What are the prospects of conflict and cooperation in this area? International relations scholar Dr. Frieder G. Dengler will review the history of China’s early diplomatic encounters with Europe and how it may help us to understand pressing challenges in international politics today. Q&A will follow his presentation.
Free to the public also available via Zoom. Pre-registration required.
